Imagine, what if the students' education experiences were as personalized as their Netflix or Amazon accounts? With the rapid penetration of different Web 2.0 technologies into the learning space, more data is generated every minute. Is this data useful? A lot! It can teach us about learners' behavior, which in turn, can help improve and personalize their educational experiences. So, let's talk about "Learning Analytics."

What is Learning Analytics? According to the 1st International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge (2011), Learning Analytics refers to 'the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs." Learning Analytics, therefore, is a promising set of practices and tools aimed to harness the power of advances in data mining, interpretation, and modeling to improve understandings of teaching and learning, and to tailor education to individual students more effectively.

Why does Learning Analytics matter? Analytics is one of higher education’s top IT-related issues. Institutions need solid methods for campus BI/data reporting and analytics to support campus priorities and decision-making. We’ve reached an inflection point where the maturation of analytics tools and the amount of data available have reached critical mass to engage in data informed solutions. Analytics can provide insight in areas such as reducing students’ time to degree, improving student learning outcomes, targeted recruitment, business process optimization, alumni relationship management, and increasing research productivity.

The aim of Learning Analytics, therefore, is to better inform educators on both their interventions to support individual students during the delivery of a classroom lesson, and in reflecting on their lesson plans.

So, the next time you hear the word "Analytics," it's not just a jargon used by a webmaster who is tracking data for his/her website. But, you should think about Learning Analytics, which combines this sort of data analysis with student interaction in an education setup, especially in online educational context. It's aim is to create a more integrated and customized learning experience. It uses intelligent data, student performance and analysis models to find out how students learn and improve on their experiences.
